Reflections From Recent Engagements

TH

Tan Hui Xin

Managing Director · Singapore

"I came to the Quiet Counsel Session carrying a decision about whether to step back from the day-to-day business in favour of my daughter. I did not leave with an answer — but I left knowing what the real question actually was. The consultant did not say much. He asked a great deal. The written reflection that came a week later was more useful than I expected."

Rajesh Kumar

Co-Founder · Singapore

"We had been circling the same governance question for about two years. The Stewardship Review gave us, for the first time, a written account of what was actually being said in different parts of the family — without anyone having to say it directly to each other. That was more valuable than any recommendation could have been."

Lim Mei Ying

CEO, Family Business · Singapore

"The retreat was well structured. I was a little uncertain before we went whether three days would be too long, but it was the individual reflection time on the second day that turned out to matter most for me personally. The written summary was accurate and careful. I would have welcomed a slightly longer follow-up conversation, but that is a small point."

Nadia Ahmad

Executive Director · Singapore

"What I found most useful was that James arrived having genuinely read everything I sent. The afternoon conversation did not start with introductions and context-setting — it started where it needed to. That preparation is not something I have experienced with other advisers."

WB

Wong Boon Huat

Chairman, Family Enterprise · Singapore

"The Stewardship Review helped surface something that had been unspoken for years — a difference in how the operating side and the ownership side understood what the business was for. The closing document did not tell us what to do, but it gave us a shared language for a conversation we had been avoiding."

Srinivas Pillai

Founding Partner · Singapore

"I used the Quiet Counsel Session to think through the timing of a partial exit. I went in uncertain whether a single day could be enough. It was. The value was not in the length of the time — it was in how it was used. I came away with three pages of notes I had written myself, which is not usually how I spend an afternoon."

Three Engagements in Detail

Quiet Counsel Session

Founder Navigating Exit Timing

March 2025

The Situation

A founder in his late fifties had received an acquisition offer that he found financially reasonable but personally uncertain about. The decision involved not just the business but his identity, his relationship with his management team, and a set of assumptions about what retirement would mean for him.

What We Did

The consultant read the acquisition term sheet, a short company history, and a personal note from the founder about his concerns. The afternoon conversation moved through the financial and the personal questions in sequence. No advice was offered on whether to accept the offer.

What Changed

By the end of the afternoon, the founder had articulated that his hesitation was not about the offer's terms but about a belief that he was not ready to stop working. He returned to negotiate a three-year consulting arrangement with the acquirer — a structure he had not previously considered.

"I went in thinking I needed help with the decision. I came out realising I needed to understand what I actually wanted."

Third-Generation Governance Questions

Jan–Feb 2025

The Situation

A family business entering its third generation had a set of governance documents that had not been reviewed in a decade. Members of the ownership group held different assumptions about who had decision-making authority on major capital decisions.

What We Did

Over six weeks, the consultant held separate structured conversations with the operating CEO and two senior managers, and then with four members of the ownership group. Existing governance documentation was reviewed and annotated. A closing document was prepared mapping where different groups held different assumptions.

What Changed

The family used the closing document as the basis for a series of facilitated family meetings — the first they had held in a structured format. Within three months, a revised governance charter had been drafted and agreed. Quintaro was not involved in those meetings.

"The document gave us something to point to — a map of what we each believed, without it being personal."

Pavilion Retreat Programme

Senior Team Alignment on Strategic Direction

April 2025

The Situation

A team of eight senior leaders at a Singapore-based professional services firm had recently gone through a period of significant growth. They arrived at the retreat with a shared concern that they were operating more as individual contributors than as a senior team, and were uncertain what question they were actually there to answer.

What We Did

Two preparation calls were held — one with the Managing Partner and one with the full team. The retreat was structured around the question the team had collectively identified in those calls: what kind of firm did they want to be in five years, and how aligned were they on that. Three days were spent in dialogue, reflection, and working sessions.

What Changed

The written summary identified four areas where the team held strong common ground and two where the conversation had revealed genuine divergence. The team chose to work through the divergence in a separate process. The summary provided the reference point for that work.

"We came away knowing where we agreed and where we did not. That sounds simple. It took three days to get there clearly."
